Lecture by Monika Rogers

Dr. Monika Rogers will deliver a lecture "Violence against Women in Soviet Lithuania," which will take place on September 12 at 2:00 p.m. The lecture will be held remotely in English.

The lecture will discuss the lives of women in Soviet-occupied Lithuania and the various forms of violence and oppression that women and teenage girls had to face. "Although Soviet ideology promised to defend women's rights, in reality, violence against them did not disappear, even though it was not readily visible. The Soviet system generated tension between the new ideals expected of women in the spheres of work and ideology and the old stereotypes that still prevailed in a patriarchal society," says Rogers.

In 2017, M. Rogers defended her doctoral dissertation on "Crime and Punishment in the Lithuanian SSR." The researcher has completed internships at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, the Hohenschönhausen Museum in Berlin, and the University of Bremen in Germany. In 2019, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Yale University's MacMillan Center (USA). In 2021–2022, she worked at Harvard University as a visiting scholar. Together with Sigita Černevičiūtė, M. Rogers has published a monograph entitled "Pati kalta? Smurto prieš moteris istorija XX a. Lietuvoje" (Vytautas Magnus University, 2021).

The lecture will be followed by a scientific discussion open to the audience.
